As most of you, I read the newspapers, the news magazines, and watch a little TV. I am overwhelmed by the amount of campaign stuff which we are getting for the November 2008 Presidential election. The first primaries aren't even here yet, and the candidates are flailing around as if the election were tomorrow. I am already worn out with it and with the candidates. If someone from the Republican or Democratic parties were to ask me if I would vote for anyone in their field of candidates right now, I would answer firmly, "NO!"
In fact, I am tired of all the candidates. I am tired of people running for President almost since the last election ended. I am equally tired of all the fund raising. I don't care what the experts say about how much an election like this will cost. Most of us lay persons are mind boggled by the sums of money being spent to elect people to office these days. It is just one more indication that politics is rapidly moving away from the average voter.
I think we need to relax a bit. For this summer, I would say to the candidates, all of them, "Let it go! Give us a break! You are wearing out the very people you are hoping will vote for you." Let's eat some water melon, go to a family reunion, attend a church homecoming. Let's go on vacation with our children and grandchildren and forget the election for a while. Then after some time off, we can return to it. Maybe we will have some new insight or fresh perspective.
I don't know about any of you, but I desperately need this. Time away from even the thought of the election. Time to get some perspective. Time to appreciate all of the candidates again. But get them out of my face--for now.
