Over the last few years, Alta Woods Baptist Church has become focused more outwardly than it ever has been before.  We still believe in strong, on campus ministries, services, and classes.  We always will.  But we have learned that there is a large mission field outside our doors in the communities round about us.  We have been challenged to be an Acts 1:8 church.  That simply means that the church begins its ministry in the neighborhood just outside its doors and continues to minister around the world.

We have ministries in apartment complexes, nursing homes, retirement complexes, and even in the Jackson Police Department Headquarters.  In these places we meet people whom we never would meet if we had not gone outside the walls of our building to do it.  We have started children's Bible clubs in the elementary school next ddor and in the day care across the street from our building.

Recently we have begun to explore the possibilities of bringing the Sunday School lesson to shut in members and friends over the cell phone, using new technology to accomplish this result.  Last Sunday night we opened the phone line to the room of one of our active members who is in the hospital.  She heard and participated in the entire service--by cell phone from our church and the telephone in her room.  Technology can open some amazing possibilities for ministry.
