Walking daily with Christ and serving Him
Alta Woods Baptist Church has always been a church concerned about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with people all over the earth, beginning right here in Jackson.
While Alta Woods is an older congregation, our desires to serve our wonderful Lord continue to motivate us to show His love through our actions.
If you are searching for a church that actively shows the love of Christ, then I ask you to come and visit us and see how we are putting our faith into practice.
Each year we collect a special offering for missionaries all over the world to aid them in their call to tell others about Jesus Christ. We also collect an offering for those serving in North America, as well as an offering just for in state Mississippi missionaries. A percentage of our weekly offerings go to support these missionaries all year round. For years we have supported Gateway Rescue Mission withmeals and desserts. We participate in mission efforts with the Baptist Children's Village, Blair Batson Children's Hospital, the Shelter for Battered Women in Jackson, The Ark, Buried Treasures, MS Baptist Medical Center Social Services, Hope House of Hospitality, and Operation Christmas Child - Shoebox Ministry to children around the world.
We have numerous off campus sites, where at least once a month we share the love of Jesus in a worship/Bible study setting. They are being carried on by servant volunteers from the congregation who lovingly show others the love of God. Such places as Belhaven Nursing Home, Highland Home, State of Mississippi Veterans Home, Emeritus at Trace Pointe, The Orchard, Forest Hill Nursing Home, Pleasant Hills Nursing Home, Villa South, Chadwick Nursing Home, and Windsong Retirement Home.
Terry Watts, our Music Director, takes our Senior Adult Choir to one or two nursing homes each month. We lead them in singing old hymns and sing several special anthems.
Under the direction of Bryce Daniels, our Student/Community Minister, we have a Bible study and recreation time for neighborhood children carried out by students from Mississippi College each week on Wednesday nights, called SWAG, Saved With Amazing Grace. There are many children in attendance. Decisions to follow Christ are frequent in this group. A Sunday morning Bible study class at Windsong Retirement Apartment Building is taught every Sunday to residents by Sid Johnson, our Minister to Senior Adults.
Mission trips are a vital part of the body of Christ here at AWBC. Our folks in years past have participated in Mission Trips from California to New York to Jamaica to Montana to Mexico. We have served in areas on the Mississippi Gulf Coast like Bay St. Louis, New Orleans, and Pascagoula after Hurricane Katrina devastated these areas. Our men have also been to Kentucky and Louisiana and many other places. They have helped build Camp Kernop, a Baptist campsite for young people and adults in Madison county.
Our people have donated clothing items to the Salvation Army after a fire that destroyed one of their main distribution centers. Our people have shown their appreciation to local Fire Departments. We annually have dinner ministries to church Widows and Widowers and to Veterans around the 4th of July and Veterans Day in November.
I pray that you will find the hand of God leading you through all the traditional and non-traditional activities and emphases of Alta Woods. If there is anything that we can do to help make this more possible, please let us know by contacting us through one of the several ways listed here on our web site.
May God bless you as you find your place of service to Him
